Urban Outfitters, Inc. is looking for talented Patternmakers who are interested in using their pattern making skills to problem solve the fit of complicated garments as Technical Designers within our Urban Outfitters, Anthropologie and Free People Brands. We are willing to train Patternmakers with no previous Technical Design experience.

Objective: To develop a garment suited to the designer's vision while simultaneously ensuring that a high level of quality and fit are achieved within the established price point and time frame. The Technical Designer for Wovens will support and collaborate with the wovens design team.


Responsibilities:

  • Review new styles with wovens designers to understand vision, and concept.
  • Advise wovens designers on pattern design and garment construction.
  • Collaborate with wovens designers to determine the best fabric and trim combinations which result in a proto set up.
  • Conduct weekly fittings with live fit models. Fit all garments to meet Company standards, Designer standards and Buyer standards.
  • Effectively communicate to vendors any required changes to the proto and repeat the fit process as required.
  • Facilitate on-going communication with vendors and respond to any technical questions.
  • Create and/or adjust patterns for vendor use as needed.
  • Draw sketches to illustrate desired pattern changes and communicate changes to vendor.
  • Ensure fittings and graded specs are completed within the allotted time frame.
  • Issue graded specs to vendor upon fit and production approval.

REQUIRED SKILLS/EDUCATION:
1. Bachelors Degree in Fashion Design or related field is required.
2. Position requires pattern making experience and pattern correction skills. Applicants must be able to adjust patterns to reflect fit changes and communicate with vendors.
3. Strong knowledge of fabrics, garment construction, sewing, technical drawing, measuring and fitting.
4. Ability to communicate technical information to vendors, manufacturers, designers.

SENIOR TECHNICAL DESIGNER for KNITS

Objective: To develop a garment suited to the designer's vision while simultaneously ensuring that a high level of quality and fit are achieved within the established price point and time frame. The Senior Technical Designer for Knits will support and collaborate with the knits design team of the Free People Brand. As a Senior Technical Designer you will oversee one or more Technical Design Assistant(s).

Responsibilities:

  • Review new styles with Designers to understand vision, and concept.
  • Advise knitwear designers on pattern design and garment construction.
  • Collaborate with knitwear designers to determine the best fabric and trim combinations which result in a proto set up.
  • Conduct weekly fittings with live fit models. Fit all garments to meet Company standards, Designer standards and Buyer standards.
  • Effectively communicate to vendors any required changes to the proto and repeat the fit process as required.
  • Facilitate on-going communication with vendors and respond to any technical questions.
  • Create and/or adjust patterns for vendor use as needed.
  • Draw sketches to illustrate desired pattern changes and communicate changes to vendor.
  • Ensure fittings and graded specs are completed within the allotted time frame.
  • Issue graded specs to vendor upon fit and production approval.

Required Skills

REQUIRED SKILLS/EDUCATION:

  1. Bachelors Degree in Fashion Design or related field is required.
  2. Position requires pattern making experience and pattern correction skills. Applicants must be able to adjust patterns to reflect fit changes and communicate with vendors.
  3. Strong knowledge of fabrics, garment construction, sewing, technical drawing, measuring and fitting.
  4. Ability to communicate technical information to vendors, manufacturers, designers.
  5. Understanding of technical terminology, machinery and computer design programs.
  6. Ability to organize work, manage time and schedule projects to meet deadlines.
Required Experience

Requires a minimum of 6 years of experience in a technical design capacity. Experience working with knits is required for this position.

As noted above, position requires strong knowledge of garment construction and pattern making and pattern corrections.
